Sr. Beavers wear out in four-game home stretch

The Weyburn Senior Beavers took a pounding this week as they struggled through a four-game home stretch, which ended in four losses against visiting Alberta teams.

The Beavers were clearly showing signs of wear by Sunday afternoon, when they hosted the Medicine Hat Mavericks. They lost 13-0 to the Mavericks, who had defeated Saskatoon 16-6 on Friday and Moose Jaw on Saturday by an unspecified score.

Instead of one of their usual starters, the Beavers put Midget pitchers Mat Larson and Devin Ledingham on the mound for the first two and a half innings. After Medicine Hat racked up 12 runs, they were replaced by Bevan Ledingham, who gave up only one more run in six and a half innings. The pitchers combined gave up 17 hits, eight walks and had five strikeouts.

Offensively, the Beavers had only two hits, seven walks and 13 strikeouts. Mike Collins, who scored a total of five RBIs in two home runs this week, was hurt in the third inning. Because so many players were tired or hurt, coach Bob Narkaus was forced to play left field.

Ironically, Weyburn had a strong showing on Saturday night versus the Calgary Dawgs, who won out by a narrow 17-16 score. Defensively, Weyburn committed five errors and Calgary had four errors over 10 innings.

Ryan Siever started the game and pitched for five innings before relief pitcher Tyrel Hansen threw for the next three. Ryan Mehler came in to close for the final two innings. Combined, they gave up 16 hits, walked eight and had nine strikeouts.

The Beavers were in the lead after three innings, but Calgary had six runs in the fourth to take the lead. Weyburn regained it briefly in the eighth, but Calgary scored a single run in the ninth to tie, and went on to win in the 10th.

Weyburn had a total of 17 hits with five walks and eight strikeouts. Coach Narkaus said he was pleased with the hitting, but defensive errors were an issue.

Josh Reagan scored four RBIs; Collins had three RBIs; Mike Larson, Nick Shushnoff and Casey Huntsinger had two each; and Adam Balan and Tanner Brotzel had one RBI each.

On Friday, the Beavers lost to the Lethbridge Bulls 5-2. Larson pitched the first six innings, giving up three runs. Kip Simon pitched two innings, giving up one run. Ryan Mehlor closed the last inning, giving up one run. The three combined for eight hits, seven walks and had six strikeouts.

The Beavers' two runs came from a two-run homer by Collins. In total, they had four hits, three walks and five strikeouts.

On Thursday, the Senior Beavers took on Red Deer losing 8-7. Ledingham pitched six innings, giving up all eight runs before being relieved by Tyrel Hansen for two innnings. He was relieved by Ryan Mehler for the last two outs.

Combined, they gave up 11 hits, walked four and threw nine strikeouts. There were three defensive errors.

Collins was again a major contributor to the Beavers' scoring, as he hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning. Larson and Jay Miller both contributed with two RBIs.

The Beavers have five days off to rest up before heading to Alberta to take on Lethbridge, Calgary and Red Deer. Their games are on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 11-13 respectively.

Weyburn's next home games are on Sunday, June 20 against Melville and Monday, June 21 against Moose Jaw.
