The Weyburn Duplicate Bridge Club hosted its first of two club championships on June 28 with the following results: in first place were Millie Nimegeers and Keith Eichel; in second were Roy Wallin and Jerry Thiessen, while George Gillies and Andy Goeres were third and Diane Bell and Fay Johnson rounded out the top four. The second club championship was held on June 30 at the Wheatland Centre in conjunction with its summer party. After a roast beef supper hosted by Millie Nimegeers and Isabelle Butters, the serious business of bridge began with nine tables in play. After three hours of bidding, declaring, defending and eating, the results were tallied. With a 112 point score, the pair of Quint Patrick and Keith Eichel were in first place, a scant half point ahead of the second place pair of Barb Fellner and Irene Martin (111.5), who were closely followed by third place pair of Fay Johnson and Diane Bell (at 111.) Following in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively were Brendine Mitchell and Barry Mactaggart (108.5), Gordon Bell and Jerry Thiessen (104), Millie Nimegeers and George Gillies (102). The Weyburn Duplicate Bridge Club with its sanction from the American Contract Bridge League is allowed to host a club championship each three month period for each evening that bridge is held. In regular club play on June 21, Barb Fellner and Fay Johnson won first, with Brendine Mitchell and Jane Kerr in second place. Verna Gordon and Chuck Widdis tied with Corrine Kot and Keith Eichel in third place. On June 23, in north-south play Brendine Mitchell and Lucie Nickel placed first with Fay Johnson and Diane Bell placing second and Sam Murray and Marg Bangsund placing third. In east-west play, Barry Mactaggart and Marg Stewart placed first, while Vern Leach and Ray Leitch placed second and Marion and Jim Brown placed third. Bridge players from the south (Bismark, Palm Springs, Calif.), the north (Yorkton), the east (Stoughton), large cities (Regina, Saskatoon), small cities (Weyburn), towns (Radville, Fort Qu'Appelle, Yellow Grass) and villages (Regina Beach), converged on Weyburn for the Weyburn Duplicate biennial tournament. Weyburn lived up to its name as hospitality capital as most of the attendees commented favourably about both the tournament and the community. Not only were the players from many locations but there was a vast range of abilities, from players with no masterpoints to those who are in the thousands. Masterpoints are awarded in relation the number of players in an event and level of competition. In the open pairs stratified event on Friday afternoon, Marg Stewart and Barry Mactaggart placed second in Strat C. On Friday evening, Gord Bell and Keith Eichel won first in both Strat B and Strat A, with Fay Johnson and Diane Bell taking second place in Strat A. Isabelle Butters and Millie Nimegeers placed second in Strat B. In the C Strat, Brendine Mitchell and Corinne Kot were second while Quint Patrick and Jim Brown finished third. The Saturday competition featured a two-session competition in which pairs played both Saturday afternoon and then again in the evening. This is a most challenging event since players play about 54 hands throughout the day. The WDBC pair of Diane Bell and Barry Mactaggart did exceptionally well. They competed in the C Strat and not only won this but also won Strat B and A. The Sunday competition was Swiss teams. This is head to head battle between two teams of four. The team of Barb Fellner, Irene Martin, Millie Nimegeers and Keith Eichel finished the two-session event in second place in the B Flight. Joanne Hennie and Meta Murray played with two Regina players to win second place in Flight C. A total of 73 tables took part in the three-day event. |
