In going through old papers (it seems to me I'm always going through old papers), I ran across an article regarding a graduating ceremony at Saskatchewan Hospital. In view of the upcoming fate of Souris Valley, I thought the following might be of interest to old-timers and new. The heading read as follows: "Thirty Graduate from Hospital at Ceremony Yesterday." The date of the article was April 24, 1958. Premier T.C. Douglas was guest speaker at the annual graduation exercises for graduating psychiatric nurses. He commended the new graduates and also paid high tribute to Dr. Humphrey Osmond, hospital superintendent, and his staff on winning the American Psychiatric Association's Mental Achievement Award. He went on to say how pleased he was to see the large turnout. He said it served as well to indicate more and more people were concerned with the problems of the mentally ill. He added much of the credit for the growing awareness in mental hospitals must go to the Canadian Mental Health Association and, in particular, the Saskatchewan branch. This article is of particular interest at this time to the Soo Line Historical Society which has just been given permission to go through files at the Saskatchewan Hospital. It has secured many files and they will be stored at the museum. What is to become of Souris Valley? Only time will tell but let's hope that there is no intention to demolish the building which has been a part of Weyburn for so many years |
