Corning held its 21st annual Sports Day on Aug. 1, starting off with a pancake breakfast served to 115 early risers. A full day of fastball for men and women kept the ball diamonds busy while the skating rink was the venue for the 4-H achievement day during the early part of the day, a beer garden, volleyball games in the afternoon, and a cabaret in the evening. The cabaret, a new addition to the day this year, had music by Odd Man Out, and was well received. The 4-H horse club held gymkhana events in the afternoon, along with face-painting, games of chance, and a dunk tank which attracted many people. There were also foot races for the different age groups, bingo in the hall and a parade of decorated bikes. During a break in the fastball action, the host teams held a competition to determine the fastest pitch. For a small fee, the contestant had three tries to land a hittable pitch in the catcher's mitt, which was clocked by a radar gun. In addition, those watching were invited to guess for a fee whose pitch would be the winner, and at what speed. As usual at such events, there was plenty of food available. In addition to the breakfast, there was an ice cream truck, a well-stocked food booth with hot dogs and hamburgers, a chicken supper and various flavours of sausage for the patrons of the cabaret. The groups involved in the Corning Sports Day include the Hall board (breakfast), the local ladies and Hall Auxiliary (supper), the Friendship Club (bingo), 4-H, men's and women's fastball teams, the Corning Cafe Association (the booth), and the Corning Community Players (power sponsors). |
