Junior Eagles lose to Argos in exciting football game

The Regina Argos defeated the Weyburn Junior Eagles 42-28 in an exciting game played at Darold Kot Field on Saturday morning.

"The players should be very proud of their effort. The coaching staff asked them to do their best every play, and that is exactly what they did," said head coach Murray Benson, adding the team is getting good leadership and effort from their veterans and rookies.

Brett Penny was the offensive player of the game for his excellent blocking and leadership at the tight end position. Kyle York was the defensive player of the game for his strong play at safety and 12 defensive tackles.

The hustle award went to Tarek Svedahl for his aggressive play at inside linebacker and his seven tackles. The lineman award went to offensive tackle Joel Wolstenholme for his impressive blocking in opening up some huge holes for the running backs.

On defence, Kyle York led with 12 tackles and Tarek Svedahl had seven tackles. Tyler Pyett and Carlyle Richard made five tackles each with Justin Pitre making four tackles and a fumble recovery. Derrick Martineau, Brett Jones and Mitchell Steininger made three tackles each. Derrick Pouliot made two tackles and had two pass knockdowns from his cornerback position, while Josh Forsgren had one tackle and one pass knockdown from the other cornerback position.

Other defensive players making a tackle or assisted tackle were Dylan Istace, Louis Schnell, Kirk Schnell, Walid Svedahl, Zayne Lendrum, Dante Elig, Justin Sletten and Tyler Gallinger.

On offence, the offensive line made some huge blocks for the running backs. Fullback Louis Schnell carried the ball eight times for 33 yards, while tailback Jordan Bod had 14 carries for 139 yards, scored three touchdowns and one two-point convert, while quarterback Brent Benson had seven carries for 84 yards, scored one touchdown, had one two-point conversion and threw two incomplete passes. Christopher Lee played the fourth quarter at quarterback.

The next action for the Jr. Eagles will be on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Darold Kot Field against the Regina Huskies. The Eagles then play on Saturday, Oct. 2 against the Regina Wolverines at Regina Leibel Field. Their final home game will be on Saturday, Oct. 9 against the Regina Wolverines.
