The Weyburn Junior High Cobras girls volleyball team played in their first volleyball tournament of the year in Swift Current, and came away with a silver medal. The girls advanced to the finals against Lucky Lake for the second year in a row. The young squad only had three Grade 9 players, but still managed to get through the round-robin with 11 wins out of 14 games. They went into the playoffs and defeated Swift Current Comprehensive two games straight, sending them to the finals where they went three games against Lucky Lake. "Lucky Lake was a very strong team. Our young team blocked well, but they adjusted and tipped to the open spots," said coach Dean Leach. "It was a very exciting series and a great tournament to start the season with," added co-coach Angie Guest. The team was led by Aleisha Johnson's hitting and blocking at the net. She had a 51 per cent kill average and 30 blocks on the weekend. Milessa and Brooke Peterson demonstrated good hustle and leadership, and kept the team spirits high all weekend. Ali Hilkewich set well through the weekend and trained new players while on the floor. A number of the rookies showed sparks of future greatness at points throughout the tournament. The next play for the girls team will be in Weyburn at St. Michael Junior High's tournament this weekend. |
