A former junior curler from Weyburn, Byron Moffatt, is the recipient of the $1,000 Hec Gervais Academic and Curling Scholarship, which is presented each year to one junior male and female curler in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The Hec Gervais Academic and Scholarship Foundation was formed in 1998 to initiate this scholarship fund, in recognition of Gervais' contributions to curling. Moffatt has competed in numerous Junior Men's Southerns and qualified for the 2004 Junior Men's provincials. He and his team were also invited to attend the Optimist Under-18 International Event in April of this year at Langley, B.C., where they captured the championship. Moffatt is also the 2004 Provincial High School Mixed champion, and also competed at the 2002 Saskatchewan Winter Games. Moffatt began his first year of post-secondary education at the University of Regina this fall. Moffatt and Allison Gerhardt of Regina, who was the other recipient of the scholarship, received their award at a formal presentation in July at Kindersley. |
