Tough defence stumps Jr. Eagles in 44-6 home loss

From a defensive standpoint, the Weyburn Junior Eagles faced their toughest opponents of the season on Saturday at Darold Kot Field, losing 44-6 to the visiting Regina Huskies.

Coach Murray Benson said, "The Huskies had the best defence we have faced all year. Their defence was all veterans and their size superiority gave us trouble all day."

The Jr. Eagles were trailing Regina 14-6 at the end of the first half. Benson said they started to move the ball in the second half, and their defence stopped the Huskies on four occasions on third-down gambles.

The offensive player of the game was rookie wide receiver Thomas Bresciani, who "ran excellent pass routes and made some key blocks," said Benson.

The defensive player of the game was tackle Mitchell Steininger, who made seven tackles and provided "valuable leadership" for the defence, Benson added.

Rookie defensive tackle Dylan Istace received the hustle award, as he made two tackles and was constantly blocking up the middle. The linesman award went to veteran offensive guard Andrew Baird, who made some huge blocks against the Huskies.

Tailback Jordan Bod made 15 carries for 151 yards, with an 85-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Brent Benson had five carries for 11 yards, and threw three incomplete passes. Fullback Louis Schnell had five carries for four yards.

On defence, Kyle York had 10 tackles, with Mitchell Steininger and Tyler Pyett making seven tackles. Justin Pitre and Brandon Fraser made six tackles each, with Tarek Svedahl making five tackles and recovering a fumble.

Brett Jones made four tackles. Carlyle Richard had three tackles and Dylan Istace made two tackles. Walid Svedahl, Derrick Pouliot, Josh Forsgren, Justin Sletten, Chris Kopytko, Derek Martineau, Kirk Schnell and Tyler Gallinger either assisted on or completed a tackle each.

The next action for the Jr. Eagles is on Saturday, Oct. 2, in Regina against the Rams. Their final home game of the season is on Saturday, Oct. 9, at Darold Kot Field at 10:30 a.m.
