The Comp Eagles football team improved their season record to 2-2 on Thursday, defeating the dismal Martin Monarchs 17-2 at Taylor Field. Martin is the only team in the league that has not had a win this season. The Eagles had the match clinched in the first quarter with a pair of touchdowns. Andy Hodgson scored the first TD on a two-yard run, while Luk Bell scored the second touchdown on a 65-yard interception. Brett Anderson converted the point on both touchdowns, and then kicked a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter. Martin didn't get on the scoreboard until they scored a safety in the fourth quarter. Though Martin's total offence was greater, the Monarchs had only nominal success in their passing game, completing only six out of 13 passes for 76 yards. Weyburn passed for 49 yards on three completed passes. Also, Martin rushed for 128 yards and Weyburn rushed for 103. The Eagles will host Notre Dame on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Darold Kot Field at 2 p.m. for their final home game. Having scored their first victory of the year against F.W. Johnson two weeks ago, Weyburn is tied with Notre Dame and Johnson in the standings for third place in the Regina Intercollegiate Football League (RIFL). A win on Saturday would essentially clinch a spot in the playoffs for the Eagles, although Weyburn still has one more game against the Usher Unicorns in Regina on Thursday, Oct. 21. With a 1-4 record, Usher is the only other team besides Martin trailing Weyburn in the standings. |
