WCS girls' soccer squad qualifies for provincials

This is a first: the Comp Eagles girls' soccer team outscoring the boys' football team.

The girls defeated Yorkton Sacred Heart at Jubilee Park 4-0 on Saturday. It was a regional qualifier for 4A provincials, so the Eagles will be heading on to Moose Jaw on Oct. 29-30.

Though the Eagles were in provincials last year, that was because they hosted the tournament. This is the first time in a while that they've qualified on their merits, said coach Scott Benning.

"It's a big step for the girls," he said. "Everybody's very excited about advancing on our own merits."

Britt Pegg scored three goals against Yorkton, with Jaelyn Greening contributing the fourth goal. Kaitlyn Fraser received the shutout in goal.

Yorkton had a lot of skill, but they were undisciplined in terms of team play. Once Weyburn got past their unrefined style of play, they dominated the game, said Benning, noting that Weyburn was up two goals at the second half.

Weyburn is among three confirmed and one possible team from the Moose Jaw high school girls' soccer league that will be attending provincials, attesting to the quality of this league, said Benning.

Prior to Saturday, the Eagles played their final two regular season league games. They tied with Moose Jaw Vanier at Jubilee Park 3-3 on Oct. 12, and lost to Caronport 2-1 on Thursday.

Pegg had three goals in both games, and Greening scored one.

Caronport was an important game, as they are undefeated throughout the season; the two teams were tied for most of the game, with Weyburn showing a really strong defence.

"A couple of breaks would have been a different result, so we're quite anxious to get another chance at them."

Weyburn will likely be facing Caronport at some point in league playoffs, which were supposed to start Monday but were canceled due to the weather.

As such, the Eagles will likely be facing Swift Current in quarter-finals at Moose Jaw today, Oct. 20.

End-of-the-season stats show that the top scorer in the league was Pegg, with 15 goals in 10 games. Throughout the 2004 season, the Eagles scored 24 goals and had 16 goals against them.
