Team advances in playoffs

Comp football team scores stunning victory

At Monday's practice, the coaches were talking about how long it's been since the Comp Eagles last scored a win in playoffs.

The Eagles made it into the playoffs last season, but received a bye into the semi-finals and were promptly defeated. In fact, the general consensus was that the Eagles football team have not scored a win in playoffs for several years.

"She's been a long time coming," one coach said.

They were speaking, of course, of Weyburn's overwhelming victory in overtime on Wednesday night against the Notre Dame Hounds, who fell 17-10 to the Eagles at Taylor Field.

The Eagles came within a hair's breadth of losing, as Notre Dame had been leading 10-1 by the end of the third quarter.

They salvaged a win in the fourth, however, on a stunning 12-yard touchdown by Josh Williams, just a minute and a half before the end of the quarter.

Brett Anderson successfully converted the point. Coupled with a safety earlier in the fourth quarter, the last-minute touchdown and conversion put Weyburn and Notre Dame into overtime with a 10-10 tie.

Bucky Schneider then sped 29 yards to score the game-winning touchdown, with Anderson converting for the extra point.

Anderson had earlier counted a single for Weyburn in the second quarter.

Weyburn outshone Notre Dame for total offence, rushing and passing for 206 yards, compared to Notre Dame's 132 yards. The Hounds failed to make a pass all game, including an incompletion in the fourth quarter that immediately preceeded Weyburn's stunning turnaround.

This was Weyburn's fifth consecutive victory this season. The Eagles had defeated Notre Dame earlier in the year.

The victory at Taylor Field qualified Weyburn to enter the Regina Intercollegiate Football League (RIFL) semi-finals, where they faced the Luther Lions on Tuesday night, Nov. 2, in Regina.

Due to the lateness of the game, results were not available at press time.
