Cool, foggy weather in SE hampers harvest progress

Harvesting progress was again slowed in the past week, with cool, foggy weather hanging in the southeast area for the most part, allowing only minimal progress with combining.

According to Sask Ag and Food, combining progress remained at 79 per cent for the southeast, including Crop District 2 and 3ASE in the Weyburn area. There is a further 13 per cent of crops that are lying in swath, or are ready for straight combining.

Provincially harvest stands at 89 per cent complete, behind the five-year average of 99 per cent complete; the southeast area is the furthest behind of all areas in the province.

The area didn't receive any large rainfalls during the week, but with the foggy conditions the humidity was high, keeping crops and fields wet. Weather-related problems arising from this condition included bleaching and mould, reported from across the southeast area.

Some of the combining which did take place was taking off triticale, canola, mustard, sunflowers, canaryseed and chickpeas. The crops taken off were tough and damp, but the intent was to get the crop off the field before winter.

With geese and ducks migrating south, many flocks of waterfowl caused damages to crops standing or lying in swaths.

Producers were also busy moving cattle in the last week, hauling bales and fencing, and where possible, applying fertilizer.
