A showcase of "phenomenal" women's hockey will be held in Weyburn this weekend, as the University of Regina Cougars, Team Saskatchewan and Team Manitoba will be playing three games at the Colosseum and Sports Arena. Team Saskatchewan will play the Cougars on Friday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Colosseum. The Cougars and Team Manitoba will then play on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 7:15 p.m. in the Sports Arena. Finally, Team Saskatchewan and Team Manitoba will play Sunday, Nov. 21, at 11 a.m. in the Sports Arena. "It will be absolutely phenomenal hockey," said Sandy McCormick, who heads the women's hockey program for the Weyburn Minor Hockey Association (WMHA). McCormick helped to bring these three teams to Weyburn through his involvement in the SaskFirst program. He coached some members of the provincial under-18 squad in the midst of their player selection process, and knows about five of the girls on Team Saskatchewan, which is comprised of Bantam and Midget players. McCormick can't say much about the Cougars or Team Manitoba, but he can vouch for the quality of players on Team Saskatchewan. "These girls are being scouted by NCAA teams, Ivy League teams There's some outstanding hockey players here," he said. "I wouldn't be surprised that they'll beat the Cougars." There is one girl from Weyburn on Team Saskatchewan: Kayley Herman, who plays goal. Herman was a goaltender last season with the all-male Bantam Redcoat Rams. McCormick said this showcase of women's hockey was organized to show local players what the future can be for a career in women's hockey. On Sunday, McCormick said there will be an opportunity for local girls' hockey players to skate with Team Saskatchewan in an "Esso Fun Days" style event, starting at 11:45 a.m. in the Colosseum. Atom players and anyone younger than Atom will be allowed on the ice first, followed by girls of any age. |
