A former Weyburn resident, Wayne Fleming, was presented with an award by the Canadian Football League (CFL) recognizing his years and contributions serving as a football official. Fleming grew up in Weyburn, graduating from the Weyburn Collegiate Institute in 1951, and is the brother of Cleone Jeffery of Weyburn. He was named by the CFL to receive the 2004 Sydney Halter Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Football Officiating, and accepted the award at the Vanier Cup luncheon held on Friday. This award is presented each year by the CFL and the Halter family to celebrate an individual who has made significant, long-term contributions to football officiating. The award is named after the CFL's first commissioner, a post he held from 1958 to 1968, and was inducted into the Canadian Sports and the CFL Halls of Fame. Fleming has been involved with football officiating since 1960 at all levels of amateur football, including the 1980 Vanier Cup, and has devoted himself to coaching and developing young officials. He has been a member of the Edmonton Football Officials Association for several decades, filling several roles such as president, game assigner, training and ratings chair. |
