Seven Vilcu's members take part in S.C. tourney

Seven members of Vilcu's Karate Klub returned from Swift Current where they participated and placed in a large tournament, the last one of their current season.

The tournament was hosted by Vilcu's Martial Arts Club of Swift Current, with over 230 competitors from Alberta and Saskatchewan. Weyburn sensei Harold Vilcu remains connected as the head instructor of the club, which was started by his daughter nine years ago.

The results are as follows.

Mike Binns, competing in the 18 and over black belt category, finished first in kata and second in weapons sparring.

Brett Vilcu, also in the 18 and over black belt category, finished first in weapons sparring, second in kata and third and sparring.

Sheena Stewart, competing in the 16 year old girls blue-brown belt category, won first in weapons sparring and second in sparring.

Robyn Herlick, competing in the 16-18 orange-green belt category, won first in kata, first in sparring and third in weapons sparring.

Jake Leguee, who competes in the 16-17 blue-brown belt category, placed fourth in sparring and fourth in weapons sparring.

Jan Rooks, who is in the 18 and over black belt category, placed second in kata and third in sparring.

Those members who have accumulated enough points will advance to the provincials, which Vilcu's Karate Klub will host in Estevan in March.
