The Weyburn Peewee Youngfellows won the Medicine Hat AA Tournament over the weekend, going undefeated in five straight games to capture the championship trophy. Weyburn's defence dominated the play, allowing only eight goals in five games. The Youngfellows' record is now 16-1-1 this season. In their first round-robin game on Friday, the Youngfellows defeated the Morinville, Alta., Ice Hawks by a score of 7-1. Brent Benson led the onslaught with three goals and four assists, while Clinton Pirio had two goals and three assists. Garret Walbaum had two goals and two assists. Linden Lang added a single assist. Brad Mryglod got the victory in goal, blocking 21 shots. Weyburn fired 48 shots at Morinville. On Saturday, Weyburn defeated the St. Albert Saints 3-2. The Youngfellows faced a hot goalie, as they only scored three times on 52 shots. Jaden Schwartz had two goals and an assist for Weyburn, while Nathan Murray added the third goal. Benson added an assist. Nathan Ferris received the win in net. In their third round-robin game, Weyburn defeated the Edmonton Knights of Columbus 3-2. Again, Weyburn controlled the puck for most of the match, outshooting Edmonton 57-21. Benson and Schwartz each had one goal and an assist, while Linden Lang added one goal and Murray added two assists. Pirio and Cody Miller also added single assists. Mryglod earned the victory in goal. With a 3-0 record, Weyburn then entered the A-side semi-final on Sunday against the powerful Medicine Hat Royals, the top team in the Southern Alberta Peewee AA League. Schwartz scored Weyburn's first goal for a 1-1 tie out of the first period. Weyburn then jumped ahead in the second period with four goals, making it 5-2. John Cugnet scored the first goal on a cross-ice pass from Tanner Dusyk. Schwartz then scored again unassisted. Linden Lang got the third goal on a breakaway, receiving a long pass from Benson. Carter Struthers completed the scoring, assisted by Schwartz. In the third period, the Youngfellows kept their lead and added another goal to boot, as Schwartz drew Medicine Hat's defenceman and goalie away from the goal and Miller scored on an empty net. Weyburn outshot the Royals 43-20. The 'A' final on Sunday was played to a packed house against the Medicine Hat Ice Dogs, who had defeated Edmonton 4-3 in the other A-side semi-final. They were in second place for the Southern Peewee League, just behind the Royals. Weyburn won the game 5-1, as they dominated the match from start to finish. Benson opened the scoring on a rebound from Pirio, followed by Murray on a beautiful three-way passs from Schwartz and Mitchell Morrison. Pirio made it 3-1, deflecting a point shot from Jackson Wagner and Schwartz. Schwartz also tallied another goal to make it 4-1, assisted by Miller. Pirio closed out the scoring, assisted by Schwartz and Morrison. Weyburn outshot the Ice Dogs 38-16, with Mryglod and Ferris splitting the goaltending duties equally. The next action for Weyburn is on Dec. 11-12, when they travel to Swift Current for two games in a first-place showdown against the Broncos. |
