Students place well at tourney

There were 60 students from Estevan, Moose Jaw, Melville, Yorkton, Regina and the Weyburn Comprehensive School on hand to compete in the invitational debate tournament at the Comp on Friday. Lane Krainyk and Myles Fish finished second out of 19 teams in the Open category.

Lane finished second out of 38 competitors in the Speaker category, and Candice Shirkie finished third in the Speech category out of 60 participants. Many residents of the community took part as judges of the debates.

Events at the Weyburn Comprehensive School are starting to slow down as Christmas approaches. The second performance of the "Home For The Holidays" concert will be held on Thursday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Two choirs, the Grade 10/11 and 11/12 choirs, participated in the annual Regina Rotary Carol Festival this past week and were well-received. The two choirs, along with the STARS Show Choir, also participated in the Quota Festival of Carols in Weyburn on Sunday.

Upwards of 200 employees and guests of the Sunrise School Division attended the awards and service banquet on Wednesday evening in the Cafetorium. Service of up to 35 years was recognized.

This past weekend the two senior basketball teams began their new season. The senior girls played in the 16-team Saskatoon Mount Royal Tip-Off Classic and finished in fourth place, losing to last year's provincial 5A champions, Aden Bowman, in the semi-finals, and coming up one point short in the third-place game against Saskatoon St. Joseph. The senior boys defeated Regina Johnson in the third place game at the Regina Miller tournament.

This coming weekend, the junior girls basketball team will play in their first tournament at Swift Current, while the senior girls will be playing at Notre Dame.
