Resident marks 90th, still working at area restaurant

It's not unusual to see seniors in the workforce, but Mary Huys of Milestone beats out most of them for sheer determination.

Mary, who just turned 90, is still helping out at the Milestone restaurant that bears her name, Mary's Place.

Though the restaurant is owned and operated by her daughters, Mary insists on helping out in the kitchen, peeling potatoes, carrots and onions.

"She says that's what keeps her going, because then she has a commitment," says her daughter Janet, who co-owns the restaurant.

Mary's Place opened in May of 1988. Though it is named after her, Mary Huys was never a manager or even an employee at the restaurant, Janet says, noting that her mother did have financial involvement in the restaurant.

Still, when it came to celebrate the 90th birthday of the mother of 10, Janet says the restaurant was naturally the place to do it.

"We just thought, since she's part of this restaurant we were going to have it at the restaurant," she says. The birthday celebration was held Saturday.
