For the first time in 23 years, the Weyburn and District United Way is struggling to meet its fund-raising objective of $120,004 and is asking local residents to send in more donations. Currently, the amount of money raised is at $108,321. Although the pledges from the United Way Communithon are still coming in, the organization is more than $11,000 short of its goal. To continue their perfect record, the United Way is urging local residents who have not yet sent in donations to please do so. Funds raised by the United Way go to 18 member agencies in Weyburn and surrounding area. These include the Alzheimer Family Support Group, Canadian Paraplegic Association, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Saskatchewan Abilities Council, VIP, the Weyburn General Hospital Guild, Canadian Arthritis, Canadian Red Cross, WASES, Special Care-A-Van Society, Weyburn and Area Earl Childhood Intervention, Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the CMHA, Weyburn Association for Community Living, Victorian Order of Nurses, Weyburn Grief Support and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Association. Donations can be mailed to the Weyburn and District United Way, Box 608, Weyburn, Sask., S4H 2K7. They can also be delivered to Expressions in the Weyburn Square Mall. The board of directors has again received an annual commitment of $15,000 from the estate of an anonymous donor, provided Weyburn and area raises a minimum of $110,000. This agreement has been signed for a further-three year commitment. This donation allows the United Way to cover administration costs, and preserve the entire amount of funds for the member agencies. |
