Forget the Chinese New Year. In the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, 2005 is proving to be the Year of the Bruins. The Estevan Bruins, now riding a 12-game winning streak, continued their dominance of the SJHL this weekend, defeating Weyburn 5-2 at the Colosseum on Saturday, and 3-1 in Estevan on Sunday. Patrick McGillicky, coming off the injury list, was the bane of the Wings' goaltending this weekend, as McGillicky scored five goals between both games. Estevan goalie Juliano Pagliero was also a force to contend with, as he stopped 35 shots on Saturday and 18 shots on Sunday. On Saturday, Weyburn had a 1-0 lead in the first period, as Kent Lillejord opened the scoring at 7:10 on a power play goal. Eric Tallent and Matt Wheeler assisted. Estevan took the game in the second period, however, as they scored four unanswered goals to create a chasm between them and Weyburn that the Red Wings couldn't overcome. Weyburn's Cody Wasik scored again at 0:28 of the third period, assisted by Ryan Grona. The score jumped to 4-2, but Estevan retaliated a few minutes later, scoring at 3:41. After that, tempers flared on the ice, as fights broke out between several Estevan players and at least two Red Wing players. Russ Monette goaltended for Weyburn, blocking 33 shots on the net from Estevan. On Sunday, the Red Wings and Bruins were scoreless in the first period. Kenny King finally broke it open for the Wings at 17:29 of the second period, assisted by Matt Fetzner and Jordan Stevenson. That would be Weyburn's only goal for the entire match. Estevan scored two power play goals in the next two and a half minutes, followed by a third goal at 7:29 of the final period. Brenden Cuthbert was in net for Weyburn, blocking 40 shots on goal from Estevan. Weyburn has not had a win against Estevan throughout the 2004-2005 season. They do not play each other again until Friday, Feb. 18. Despite Weyburn's poor result this weekend, the Wings are still one point ahead of Melville for fourth place in the Sherwood Conference. However, the Millionaires are one game behind the Red Wings, so Weyburn's lead is very slim. This week, the Wings host the Notre Dame Hounds at the Colosseum on Friday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. They head to Wilcox for a road game with Notre Dame on Sunday, Jan. 9. |
