The Weyburn Peewee AA Youngfellow Wings won the Regina Coca-Cola Classic Tournament over the weekend, scoring a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against the Medicine Hat Royals in the A-side final. The Youngfellows were undefeated this weekend, going 6-0 to win the gold medal. They competed against teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In their first game on Thursday morning, the Youngfellow Wings crushed the Regina Kings 5-0, with Brad Mryglod taking the shutout in goal. Brent Benson led with two goals, with Nathan Murray, Jackson Schneider and Cody Miller getting singles. Clinton Pirio, Rogan Milatz, Jaden Schwartz and Nathan all added assists. Pirio also earned the nod for game MVP. In their second and final pool game, the Youngfellows trounced the Portage La Prairie Terriers 8-1. Benson exploded for a hat trick and three assists, earning the game MVP star. John Cugnet earned two goals and one assist, while Jaden Schwartz had one goal and three assists. Pirio and Linden Lang had single goals, while Carter Struthers, Tanner Dusyk, Reid Jackson and Cody Miller added single assists. Nathan Ferris earned the victory in goal. In the playoffs Leading the 'A' pool with two wins, Weyburn then faced the Estevan Bruins for their first playoff game and won 8-2. Nathan Murray got the hat trick while Benson and Schwartz each had two goals and two assists. Dusyk had a single goal. John Cugnet added four assists. Lang, Ryan Murray, Struthers, Garrett Walbaum, Pirio and RJ Arts, who was named game MVP, added one assist each. Mryglod got the victory in goal. Weyburn then faced the Broncos in the A-side quarter-final, shutting out Swift Current 6-0. Ferris earned the win. Schwartz led the Wings with two goals and two assists, while Benson added one goal and two assists. Walbaum also had one goal and one assist. Dusyk and Struthers had two assists each, while Nathan and Jackson got singles. Arts and Lang added assists. Jackson was named the game MVP. On Saturday night, the Wings defeated the Lethbridge Storm 7-4 to win the A-side semi-final game. Schwartz had five points, scoring two goals and three assists, while Benson contributed a hat trick. Walbaum and Nathan added the remaining goals. Ryan had two assists while Cugnet, Wagner, Dusyk and Miller got single assists. Again, Mryglod earned the win in goal. Schwartz earned his second game MVP nod. In the 'A' final, Weyburn faced Medicine Hat, who had won the other A-side semi-final against the top team in Winnipeg, the Pembina Trail Twins. Weyburn came out flying in the first period, outshooting the Royals 19-4. Backed by Ferris in goal, they took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Benson, sent a beautiful pass by Jackson. Medicine Hat tied the game in the second period, and the third was scoreless. Weyburn had dominated the shooting 44-14, but were thwarted constantly by tournament MVP goalie Chase Comistek. Finally, in the fourth minute of three-on-three overtime, Jackson fed a pass to Nathan Murray, who went on a 2-on-1 break with Schwartz and blasted a slapshot against the Royals' net. Benson, who tied with Schwartz for tournament scoring, was named to the tournament all-star team. Ferris finished in second place for save percentage among tournament goalies, while Struthers and Arts were in the top ten defencemen. On to third provincial round The Youngfellow Wings also won their second round of SHA provincial playoffs this week, defeating Moose Jaw 8-3 on Jan. 25 in the second game of the series. The final total was 14-4 for Weyburn. Benson, Schneider and Schwartz each scored twice, with Pirio and Murray adding singles. Cugnet had three assists, Benson had two and Schwartz, Pirio, Wagner, Struthers, Ryan and Nathan had single assists. Ferris earned the win in goal. Weyburn outshot Moose Jaw 60-13. The Youngfellows play the Moose Mountain Wild in the third round of provincials, beginning on Thursday, Feb. 3, in Carlyle. The winner of the series will advance to the south final against the Hockey Regina champion. Weyburn also hosts the Melville Millionaires on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 5:15 p.m. in the Colosseum, and the Estevan Bruins on Sunday, Feb. 6, at 1:30 p.m. |
