A ruling in their favour snatched the Weyburn EnCana Wings from the brink of defeat in their provincial series against Caronport last week. Weyburn manage to defeat Caronport 4-3 in the two-game total-point provincial series, which came to a conclusion on Wednesday with a 3-1 victory in Weyburn. Prior to Wednesday, the Wings had been trailing 2-1. Game 1 of the series had initially ended 3-1 in Caronport's favour, but a bad call from a referee prompted Weyburn to protest, forcing the final 10:58 of the game to be re-played on Feb. 8. Instead of scoring two goals in that final 11 minutes, Caronport only got one more. Had the original result been kept, the two teams would have been tied 4-4 after Wednesday. The Wings played on Wednesday without all-star defenceman Kyle Haines and coach Darren Miller, who were suspended. Brennan Luffman scored the Wings' first goal in the first period, assisted by Troy Miller and Raymond Cugnet. Miller and Cugnet also assisted on a power play goal by Jesse Niemegeers in the third period, which put the score at 2-1. Miller then picked up a shorthanded goal to finish the game. The next round in provincials will be with Yorkton. Game 1 will be played in Yorkton on Tuesday, Feb. 22, and Game 2 will be in Weyburn on either Friday or Saturday, Feb. 25-26. Their next league game is at the Colosseum versus Notre Dame on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 8 p.m. They then host Yorkton for the final two league games of the season. The first game is at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, and the second game is on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 3:45 p.m. Both games are at the Colosseum. |
