The Weyburn Devils wiped out the Theodore Buffaloes on Saturday, winning the second game of their best-of-three series by score of 5-4. The Devils had previously hosted Theodore on Feb. 7, defeating them 8-4. The win on Saturday brought the series to a close. Though Theodore was a strong team that boasted many ex-Junior 'A' players from Melville and Yorkton, the Devils were younger and faster, said coach Doug Lumb. "Their defence was pretty slow. That was definitely to our advantage," he said. Weyburn will next play Bienfait in the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) provincial series. Though dates for all three games haven't been set, one match will definitely take place in Weyburn on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. This game will be held at the Colosseum. If the Devils sink the Coalers, they will face either Balgonie or Southey in the south final. From there, they will face the northern champions from SHA playoffs. In Big Six action, Weyburn traveled to Oxbow for a 7-0 shutout against the Huskies. The Devils had one final game last night, Feb. 15, in Moosomin. This is an important game, because Weyburn is trailing Wawota by one point for first place overall in the Big Six. Therefore, a win is necessary to catapult Weyburn back into top spot and gain home ice advantage in the playoffs. Though nothing definite has been set yet for league playoffs, Weyburn will be facing either Midale or Carnduff in their first round. Those two teams will be playing a survivor series to see who makes the playoffs, said Lumb. |
