Three Weyburn, Midale rinks qualify for prov'ls

Three local teams, two from Weyburn and one from Midale, will be heading to the Saskatchewan High School Athletics
Association (SHSAA) curling provincials in Kerrobert from March 2-6.

They qualified for provincials by finishing in the top two of their respective divisions at the Southeast District Curling Championships, which were held in Weyburn on Feb. 21-22.

A Weyburn Comprehensive School rink and a Midale Central School rink won the 'A' and 'B' side qualifiers respectively out of the boys' division.

The Weyburn curlers included Jared Niemegeers, Brad Hannah, Brock McGuire and Kory McGuire. They were coached by Butch Obst.

The Midale curlers included Kyle Hoium, Todd Littlejohn, Spencer Oesch and Brett Thompson. Kyler Emde is their fifth and Jo-Anne Lee is their coach.

The Niemegeers rink went undefeated in three consecutive games, including a victory over the Hoium rink from Midale. The Hoium rink had won their first two matches, but the loss to Weyburn bumped them into the 'B' side. There, they won the final qualifier.

The other local team heading to provincials is the mixed team of Brennen Jones, Sara Nikolejsin, Brad Wallin and Megan Hill, representing the Weyburn Comprehensive School. They are coached by Jim Nikolejsin.

The Jones rink went undefeated in three games to win the mixed division 'A' side qualifier, defeating Radville and two Wawota teams. The 'B' side qualifier went to one of the Wawota teams.

The girls' pool was won by teams from Carnduff and Oxbow.

There were two other Weyburn teams entered in the Southeast District Curling Championships, along with teams from Lampman, Gladmar, Estevan and Fillmore.
