Regional college to use Internet for fall courses

The Southeast Regional College has introduced a new method to deliver classes called Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL), using the Internet to offer numerous courses in remote locations which otherwise would not have access to the programs.

TEL will come into use soon for the business certificate program, which will use TEL for video-conferencing between Estevan and Weyburn.

Among the college programs in great demand are the trades courses for industry and health care, which offer highly competitive wages and a high employability in this region. The college will offer welding in Weyburn and Assiniboia this fall, as well as heavy duty tri-trades in Moosomin, pre-trades in Assiniboia, cosmetology in Estevan and home care/special care aide in Whitewood.

The college says the courses fill very quickly on a first-come, first-served basis.

This fall the new media communications program will be offered. "There are wait lists all over the country for this program and we are proud to offer this course in the state of the art setting of the EnCana Media Lab," said marketing manager Gloria Stevenson.

College consultant Trent Jordens said the emerging needs of the market are determined by advisory groups, surveys and business consultants. "It's a great service for the college to be able to offer this quality programming at the same cost as SIAST but in our smaller cities or towns where living expenses are lower."

Course content is set by SIAST and successful students receive their credit certificates from SIAST.
