Daffodil sales begin for Canadian Cancer Society

As spring approaches, the Canadian Cancer Society have begun selling their "Flowers of Hope", the bright yellow daffodils which help people get in the mood for warmer weather, and is a major fund-raiser for the cancer society.

Daffodil chairperson Jen Andrews, in her first year of organizing the fund-raiser, has sent out packages to Weyburn and area businesses to begin collecting pre-orders for the flowers, and in the week leading up to Easter weekend the flowers will be available to the general public at the Co-op food store and Wal-Mart store.

The bright yellow flowers are available for $6 for a bundle of 10 stems. The goal of the Southeast Unit is to raise about $32,000 for cancer research and other activities related to cancer.

The unit has ordered about 160 boxes of the flowers, which is slightly more than last year, as Easter this year falls at the end of the sales period at the end of March, said Andrews. The boxes are slated to arrive on Saturday, March 19, and volunteers will gather the afternoon of Sunday, March 20 to package the flowers.

Andrews said volunteers are needed for this job, with the packaging to take place in the New Generation Dance studio. Volunteers are also needed to sit at the tables when the flowers are being sold on March 21-24 at the Co-op and Wal-Mart stores, right up until Good Friday, March 25.

The delivery of flowers presold at city businesses will be on Monday and Tuesday, March 21-22.

Proceeds from the sale of the flowers go towards helping to transport cancer patients to treatments; pays for educational material used in schools, workplaces, doctors' offices and for cancer patients; provides support services to cancer patients; and funds cancer research. The Cancer Society is the single largest funder of cancer research in Canada.

The offices for the Southeast Unit will also be moving at the end of March, from their current location on Fifth Street to a downtown location, at 114 Third Street.
