February weather very dry, breaks 40-yr. record

The weather in the month of February was warmer and much drier than average in the city of Weyburn, with a new record set for low precipitation.

The city and area only received 2.2 millimetres of precipitation, which broke a 40-year-old record of 2.5 mm set in 1965. The record for high amounts of precipitation is 50 mm set in 1998.

The level of precipitation so far this winter has been higher than average, however, with 102.6 mm recorded since Oct. 1, with the long-term average for the winter being 85.2 mm (for October through February).

Temperature-wise, the month was slightly warmer than normal, with the average high temperature at -3.9, compared to the long-term average high of -6.1.

The average low this February was -15.1, only slightly above the long-term average low of -16. The overall average or mean temperature was -9.5, a bit warmer than the long-term average of -11.

The highest temperature recorded in February was 6.5 on Feb. 11, only a half-degree off the record high of 7 set in 1990.

The coolest temperature of the month was -28.5 on Feb. 7, a long ways from the record on that date of -37.5 set in 1994.
