The Weyburn and District Multicultural Council will host Folkarama on Saturday, March 19 in McKenna Hall. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 1 p.m. Vice president Sandra Marcotte said Monday four major groups will perform during the afternoon. Both junior and senior groups within the local Ukrainian Dance Club will perform, as well as the Creelman Jug Band, the Regina Polonia Polish Dance Ensemble, and the Maharlika Philippine Dancers, also from Regina. A variety of ethnic foods and a dessert table will be offered. Marcotte said the Weyburn and District Labour Council will display entries to this year's colouring contest that encourages acceptance of different ethnicities in the workplace. The display fits in well with Folkarama, she said, since it's held at this time of year to help celebrate the UN's International Day Against Racism on March 21, she said. "It's a fun program. There will also be a little bit of information about what our group is about. We try to give people a reason to celebrate their ethnic background," she said. The club tries to help people open their minds to see the similarities and differences among different groups, and to celebrate the province's diversity. "We don't have a big population but it's diverse," she said. Door prizes and raffles will also be held during the afternoon. The cost of attendance is a silver collection. Donations are always welcome, said Marcotte. |
