Fillmore students Sheena Stewart and Amber Kyrylchuk
show off their science display entitled, Trans Fat: Are You a
Target?, at the Southeast Regional Science Fair at 33 Central
School on Wednesday. The girls did a survey of 24 Fillmore students
from various grades to see which age and gender group consumed
the most trans-fat type foods, and found Grade 10 males ate the
most, while Grade 11 males consumed the least. The result surprised
the girls, who predicted Grade 11 females would eat the least
amount of trans-fats. The girls won two awards for this project,
including the gold medal for biotechnology in the senior category,
and a gold medal from the Sun Country Health Region for the senior
category. They were part of a group of around 250 students from
around the southeast area who entered the fair for a chance to
go on to the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Vancouver, with two
displays chosen to advance, along with two more which will go
to the Winners Showcase in Regina this fall. For more photos
