Students at St. Michael Junior High were busy through the month of March leading up to the Easter break with music, science and cultural events. The SMJH science fair was held on March 9, attended by many parents and families, with the winners going on to the Regional Science Fair in Fillmore on March 16. Students Matt Dreis and Kyle Kot won a gold medal in the junior biotechnology category for their project, Extracting DNA. Other representatives from St. Michael included Claudia Lenferna and Alaina Flaaten, Brenna Moser and Courtney Walkeden, Rolan Anderson and Jon Neuberger, Teagan Pragnell, Whitnee Sidloski and Tyler Pyett. On March 17, the Grade 8 Social Studies classes put on a Culture Fair, and Grade 7 and 9 classes toured through the fair, which included aspects of different cultures, like dress, food, customs and so on. Band students had successful performances at the Weyburn Music Festival, and now are preparing for their final concert and band trip, both in May. The Concert and Jazz bands will also perform at St. Dominic on May 18. Grade 9 students are currently making their course choices for Grade 10 at the Weyburn Comprehensive School. They have attended orientations, and are receiving guidance as to their course selections. Judy Holyer, with the assistance of John Nikolejsin, have scheduled several presentations on careers with a wide range of community professions. Saskatchewan Express performed for the students on March 14, and were joined by the Grade 6 students from St. Dominic. Drama club students are currently preparing for a major production, which will be staged at McKenna Hall on the evenings of Thursday and Friday, April 28 and 29. Basketball has wrapped up at the junior high, and badminton season is now underway, with two school teams formed. Their first tournament was over the March 19 weekend at Yellow Grass. The Students of the Month for February were named, and include from Grade 7, Aliesha Gall, Laurae McIvor and Rikki Bell; from Grade 8, Paige Kater and Kelsey Pragnell; and from Grade 9, Baron Anderson and Jon Neuberger. |
