The Weyburn Peewee Youngfellow Wings completed the 2004-2005 post-season with a league championship and a provincial silver medal last week. In South Saskatchewan Hockey League playoffs, the Youngfellow Wings defeated the Moose Mountain Wild in the best-of-three championship series 2-1. After losing the first game but winning the second, Weyburn finished off the Wild with a 5-3 victory in Weyburn on Wednesday. Clinton Pirio, Jaden Schwartz and Brent Benson scored for Weyburn, though Schwartz also had two assists. Pirio, Benson and Jackson Schneider also scored single assists. Stephen Branigan, Devon Shackleton and Tyler Roy-Hampton also had goals for the Wild. Nathan Ferris earned the win in goal. Weyburn outshot the Wild 28-22. The Youngfellow Wings also came within an inch of scoring the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) provincial championship on March 22, when they hosted the Tisdale Ramblers at the Colosseum. Weyburn had been leading in the two-game total-point series after winning the first match 5-4. On March 22, the Wings managed a 5-2 lead going into the third period, but Tisdale turned the game around and scored four goals to tie up the series 10-10. After two periods of overtime, Tisdale finally beat Weyburn out in the sixth period. Schwartz and Nathan Murray each had two goals, with RJ Arts adding a single goal. Pirio had four assists, while Benson, Schwartz and Jackson Wagner each had single assists. Tisdale was led by Spencer Lindsay with three goals and three assists. Rylan Oleksyn, Tyson Chelsberg, Calder Neufeld and Kent Porter each had a goal, though Porter scored the game-winner in OT. Tisdale outshot Weyburn 56-42. Wings enter Calgary tourney The Youngfellow Wings played a post-season tournament at Calgary, Alta., over the weekend, losing out in the semi-finals. The Peewee AA Youngfellow Wings were entered in the Calgary Crowchild International Challenge from Friday to Sunday. On Friday, they tied the Nashville Predators 1-1 in their first game, with Benson picking up their only goal on an assist from Schwartz. Brad Mryglod goaltended. In their second game, Weyburn defeated the Edmonton Northeast Eagles 6-4. Schwartz led the attack with two goals and three assists. Pirio had two goals and Benson scored one goal and two assists. Carter Struthers added another goal, with Ryan Murray and Mitchell Morrison each contributing two assists. Ferris picked up the win in goal. The Wings then defeated the Calgary Crowfoot Canucks 5-3 on Saturday morning. Schwartz again led the scoring with four goals and one assist; the remaining goal was scored by Benson, who also had an assist. Ryan Murray and Rogan Milatz each had two assists, while Nathan Murray had one assist. Mryglod was the goalie for Weyburn. Weyburn finished the round-robin in first place. They then played the Calgary Trails West in the first playoff game and defeated them 6-3, despite being down 3-1 at one point. Schwartz had his second four-goal match, while Benson added two goals and three assists. Mitchell Morrison and Ryan Murray each had two assists, while Struthers, Schneider and Jackson each had single assists. Ferris picked up the win in goal. Weyburn then played Sunday morning against the Calgary Bow Valley Flames and lost 7-6 in overtime. Nathan Murray led the Weyburn scoring with a hat trick, though Benson led in points with four assists. Morrison had two goals and Schneider had a single goal. Schwartz picked up two assists. Mryglod took the loss in goal. The Youngfellows end the year with a record of 50 wins, five losses and four ties. Besides the league championship, they also won the Medicine Hat Tournament in December and the Regina Coca-Cola Classic in January. |
