Weyburn Red Wings start practicing for RBC Cup

The Weyburn Red Wings were called back into action this week, holding their first practices since they were eliminated from the SJHL playoffs.

"We're back and healthy and enthused," said GM Ron Rumball, adding that none of the players are out because of injuries or serious illness.

The Red Wings have three weeks to practice before the start of the 2005 RBC Royal Bank Cup, which runs May 7-15, 2005. As the host team, Weyburn will be playing several games during the course of the Cup.

The Wings will be practicing frequently at the Sports Arena in the next three weeks.

Also, to help shake some of the cobwebs off, the Red Wings will be playing the Briercrest Clippers on Thursday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Arena.

On Friday and Saturday, April 15-16, the Red Wings will head down to Bismarck, N.D., to play the local Junior 'A' franchise. Bismarck will be back in Weyburn on Friday, April 22.

No other games are definite as of yet. However, the public is welcome to attend any of these exhibition matches.

Rumball said they have also pulled in some of their Junior 'B' affiliates. He didn't definitely say whether any of these players will be with the Wings when the RBC Royal Bank Cup rolls around.

"How they do in practice will determine, I guess, whether they'll be on the roster," he said.

The Red Wings were eliminated by the Humboldt Broncos during the semi-final series of the SJHL Sherwood Conference playoffs in early March.
