Weyburn will play host to what may be its first AAA hockey tournament on the April 30-May 1 weekend, as four peewee AAA teams will be visiting the city. The teams are the Saskatchewan Wheatland Stars, the Saskatchewan Hustlin' Huskies, the Manitoba Lightning and the Calgary National Hockey Development (NHD) team. The two Saskatchewan teams pull their players from across the province, with the Huskies taking the northern half of the province and the Stars taking the southern half. Several members of the Wheatland Stars are also members of the Weyburn Peewee AA Youngfellow Wings, including Brent Benson, Nathan Ferris, Ryan Murray, John Cugnet, Reid Jackson and Cody Miller. Murray Benson of Weyburn is also one of the team's coaches, and Dave Ferris from Milestone is a goalie coach. Likewise, the Manitoba Lightning has some of the top peewee players in Manitoba, and Calgary has the top selects from their city and the rest of southern Alberta. There will be a total of eight games during the tournament. On Saturday, April 30, the Hustlin' Huskies will play versus the Calgary NHD at 8 a.m., the Wheatland Stars will play Manitoba at 10 a.m., Calgary will play Manitoba at 2:30 p.m. and the Wheatland Stars play the Huskies at 4:30 p.m. There will also be a skills competition at noon. On Sunday, May 1, the Calgary NHD will play the Wheatland Stars at 8 a.m. and Manitoba plays the Huskies at 10 a.m. The first vs. second and third vs. fourth playoff games will take place at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Calgary will be playing at 2:30 p.m. no matter what, so the playoffs will be adjusted accordingly. The Saskatchewan Wheatland AAA Hockey organization has existed now for 14 years. The organization allows the top players in southern Saskatchewan to extend their hockey season by several months and play against some of the other spring or summer teams from across North America. Each year there are seven boys and three girls' teams formed. Each of the boys' teams boasts players born in a single year; all the members of the team coming to Weyburn were born in 1993. Traditionally, the teams practice on weekends in Regina and then travel to various AAA tournaments across North America. However, most of the athletes are involved in other sports, such as soccer, baseball, swimming or motocross, so coaching staff try to be very flexible and allow their players to involve themselves in other sports. |
