Pet adoption ads working great for Humane Soc.

The weekly pet adoption feature for the Weyburn Humane Society in the Weyburn and Area Booster has been meeting with great success, with most of the animals featured being adopted out within a short time.

Each week a different animal from the Weyburn animal shelter is featured, and so far the adoption rate has been near 100 per cent, said board member Carole Miller.

"When people are thinking of adopting a pet, this is where they should start out, to have a look and see there are lots of good animals at the shelter," said Miller.

The ads, which feature a photo of the animal and a brief description or explanation, have "been very successful" in attracting interest, but Miller urges people to also take the time to stop by the shelter.

"We want people to come in and not just call. Bring your family in and see the dog or cat, and see if you bond with them. It's a full-time responsibility; that's what we try to stress. We're not just adopting animals for adoption's sake," said Miller.

She recalled one success involved a dog named Flip, who had been in the shelter for over a year before a farm family in the Assiniboia area called about it after seeing the Booster at a friends' place.

"What we are encouraging for those who call in from the Booster is to spend some time with the animals. The staff will be happy to help them. They may be able to give some tips, such as how to care for them," said Miller.

Some of those who have successfully adopted pets from the shelter will be invited to attend the mall display the Humane Society will have to celebrate the second annual Be Kind to Animals Week on Saturday, May 7.

The society will be located in the former Sears location from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the City Centre Mall, and a number of animals will be showcased there.

The Weyburn Humane Society has a fund-raising goal of $1,000 for the day, to go towards a new furnace needed at the shelter building.

There will also be a display of the adopt-a-pet pictures, said Miller, and Russ Roome will give a dog-training demonstration at 2 p.m.

She noted the week is a national promotion through the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies.
