As three Young Fellow Club volunteers worked furiously behind the "big board" late Saturday night, managing the more than 500 cards for all the items up for bid that night, Access Television broadcast the 48th Annual Young Fellows' TV Auction live from McKenna Hall. "Only 20 minutes to go boys," one of them called out as they plucked cards from their slots and replaced them with fresh bids or, just as quickly, sold cards. "They worked their tails off," said auction chairman Jack Diede. "Everybody worked their tails off." Out front, other members of the Young Fellows Club of Weyburn rattled off the names of bid winners, worked the phones, and took payments. A car horn indicating that a specific item had been won blasted several times a minute. But the horn only had to go once to make the auction a success, said Diede. "You sell one thing and you meet your expectations. We don't have all the totals added up yet, but everything sold," including a pair of tickets to see Cher in Regina that went for $400, Diede said. The final hour rush was no surprise, either. "You get close to quitting time and everybody wants to get their bids in. It's like that every year." It's during that frenzied period that Diede says the Young Fellows' Club steps up and responds to the pressure. "It's a club project and without the club members, we couldn't pull it off. Or without the businesses who donate the articles up for bids. Everything is donated and we thank them for that." All the money raised by the Young Fellows' televised auction goes back into the community through the various charitable functions the Young Fellows help to promote. This year the community can count on those funds, as it has
been able to do for the past 48 years, thanks to the very community
the funds go to help, said Diede. "I thought it went really well and I would just like to thank everybody who made it a success, the volunteers, businesses, and community." |
