SCA Legends of Curling Honour Roll:

Curling Museum, two individuals recognized

By Greg Nikkel

Weyburn's Turner Curling Museum received a national and provincial award, and two individuals, Chuck Pachkowsky and Delores Miller along with the Bob Pickering rink of Milestone were named to the Legends of Curling Honour Roll at the annual awards reception for the Saskatchewan Curling Association held in Saskatoon.

The provincial association recognized the current year's best curlers and teams, and also named the Legends of Curling Honour Roll, with Don and Elva Turner named in the Builders category for the Turner Curling Museum.

The Turners also received national recognition, as they won the Canadian Curling Association President's Award as special acknowledgement of their museum of curling history.

The museum is considered to be the only one of its kind in the world, devoted entirely to curling, with many historic curling artifacts and memorabilia. The museum was started more than 30 years ago as a collection of lapel pins and curling memorabilia. Since then, curling has been named as the Official Sport of Saskatchewan.

"It was certainly rewarding to get it, not only for ourselves, but for curlers everywhere," said Elva Turner, who travelled to Saskatoon to accept the awards on behalf of her and her husband.

"We were thrilled," said Don. "We were very pleased it got recognized, and we hope it will carry on."

In addition, Chuck Pachkowsky was inducted in the Media category, for his years of broadcasting curling for CFSL and CJSL radio.

He began broadcasting curling matches in 1973, and his last broadcast was after the Brier in 1994.

"I was about the only one who followed the curling right from the curling rink in Weyburn right to Scotland or Switzerland or wherever in Canada it was being held," said Pachkowsky, adding the highlight for him of his broadcasting years were the people he met along the way.

Weyburn curler Delores Miller was also inducted to the Honour Roll. Over her curling career, she attended the mixed provincials twice, winning in 1964 and going on to finish fifth at the nationals, then in 1976 she won the women's provincial title and went on to finish third in the nationals. More recently, she has played in the Senior Women's provincials three times, advancing as far as the finals in 1993 when she lost to Marion Mazinke. She also played in the Women's northern playdowns 10 times.

The Bob Pickering rink of Milestone was also inducted in the Teams category, as they won the Tankard provincial men's championship title in 1968, 1970 and 1971. The team was comprised of Pickering, Garnet Campbell, Jack Keys and Gary Ford. As a curler, Pickering attended 17 southerns, was in the provincials 10 times and won six times; as well he attended mixed provincials twice, and the senior provincials twice.

Pickering, along with Campbell and Keys, are enshrined in the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame.
