A Bantam mixed team with the Weyburn Hurricanes Water Polo Club scored bronze at the Saskatchewan provincials on Saturday at the Regina Lawson Centre. The team was comprised of boys and girls in the age 12-13 division. Weyburn was a three-time champion going in, but the team had not defeated Estevan all season, so they knew they would have to really excel to win the championship. Regina also entered three teams in the event and their strength was an unknown. Weyburn started the competition against Estevan. The first quarter was scoreless but Estevan battered Weyburn with a 3-0 lead in the second. The Hurricanes won the third quarter two goals to one, but Estevan stole two goals in the fourth to win 6-2. The Regina II and III teams were easier opponents and Weyburn defeated them 11-0 and 9-3 respectively. Weyburn then had to defeat the Regina I team to make the gold medal game. The Hurricanes started the game with great focus and intensity, winning the first quarter 3-0 and leading 4-1 at the half. However, Weyburn lost their focus in the second half, relinquishing the ball too often and letting Regina enjoy too much space and time. Regina scored six goals to win the game 7-5. Having lost their shot at a gold medal, Weyburn settled for winning the bronze medal. They played a tight, well-controlled game against Regina III in the bronze match, winning 12-1. Meanwhile, Estevan edged out Regina 3-2 to win the provincial title. Playing for the team were Chantel Johnson, Jordan Huebner, Jordan Kerr, Paige Mahnic, Kayla Oberg, Jane Pegg, Kaylyn Jensen, Brenna Moser, Sydney Huebner (Atom), Claudia Lenferna, Maria Siourounis, Courtney Walkeden, Russell Lenferna (Atom), Jackson Pegg (Atom) and Adam Swertz. The team is coached by Alain Lenferna. The Weyburn Hurricanes will end their season on Sunday, May 15, with their AGM and wind-up at the Leisure Centre. |
