Weyburn hosts Wheatland AAA Classic:

Weyburn players aid Stars to Classic victory

Several local hockey players helped capture the championship of the Wheatland AAA Classic hosted in Weyburn on Saturday and Sunday.

Ryan Murray, Brent Benson, John Cugnet, Nathan Ferris, Reid Jackson and Cody Miller aided the Saskatchewan Wheatland AAA Stars, an all-star team of 12-year-old players from across southern Saskatchewan, as they won the Wheatland AAA Classic.

Other teams competing this weekend at the Classic were the Calgary NHD, the Saskatchewan Hustlin' Huskies and the Manitoba Lightning.

On Saturday, the Wheatland Stars defeated both the Manitoba Lightning and the Hustlin' Huskies by scores of 4-3.

In the Wheatland-Manitoba game, Benson scored two goals and two assists and Cody Miller had two assists. Nathan Ferris got the win in goal.

Two other Wheatland players, Ben Johnstone and Jordan Paddock, scored two goals and one assist respectively.

In the game against the Huskies, Benson led with a hat trick and one assist. Miller contributed one goal and one assist.

Johnstone and another Wheatland player, Blaine Thomson, scored two and one assists respectively. Matt Gibney got the win in goal.

The Calgary NHD won the other two games held that day, as they defeated the Hustlin' Huskies 4-2 and the Manitoba Lightning 6-4.

On Sunday, the Wheatland Stars defeated the Calgary NHD 4-3. Benson had one goal and two assists, Miller had two assists and Jackson had one assist.

Erik Benoit had two goals and one assist, Joshua Schwindt had one goal and Graham Black and Blaine Thomson had one assist. Gibney got the win in goal.

The Huskies also defeated the Lightning 11-6.

In the 'A' championship game, the Wheatland Stars defeated Calgary 5-1. Benson led with a whopping four goals and one assist, Ryan Murray got one goal and two assists, Cody Miller had two assists and Harrison Ruopp had one assist.

Ferris got the win in goal.

The 'B' championship final was won by the Saskatchewan Hustlin' Huskies, who defeated Manitoba 2-1 in overtime.

Saturday also featured a skills competition. Ryan Murray won the accuracy event and Benson won the hardest shot event.

Other winners included: Jason Swyripa and Tanner Muth of the Calgary NHD (fastest skaters), Ben Johnstone of the Wheatland Stars (puck-carrying speed), Patrick Johnson of the Huskies (top goalie in showdown), David Miazga of the Huskies (player showdown) and the Manitoba Lightning (team showdown).

The next action for the Wheatland Stars is the Winnipeg, Man., Champions Cup on May 26-29. This event features teams from across North America. Last year, the Stars lost in the 'A' final to the Detroit Little Caesars.
