Weyburn area seeding is furthest ahead in southeast

Farmers in the Weyburn area made the most progress in seeding this year's crops of most areas in the southeast region in the past week, and there were reports of some possible frost damage.

The southeast received a mix of snow and rain in the past week, with varying amounts of moisture reported throughout the region. The area around the city of Weyburn received close to 10 millimetres of moisture, and the RM of Cymri recorded 12 mm. Brokenshell and Fillmore RMs reported 2 mm, Wellington had 4 mm, the RM of Francis had 5 mm, Lake Alma RM had 7 mm and The Gap ranged from 3 to 5 mm rainfall.

Seeding progress over the southeast area was about 43 per cent complete, with the province as a whole around 47 per cent finished seeding. This is ahead of the five-year average of 35 per cent completion by this point in May. Crop district 2A, which is in and around the Weyburn area, is the furthest ahead in the southeast with about 67 per cent of the crop planted.

Early plantings of wheat and peas were also emerging in 2A, and there were reports of possible frost damage to canola, alfalfa and flowering trees in the district. CD 3ase, which is directly south of CD 2A, also reported possible frost damage to canola and lentils.

In crop district 2B, just to the north of the Weyburn area, some producers were reported to be switching from seeding flax to other crops, as there is a shortage of good quality flax seed.

Throughout the southeast, pasture and hay land are slow to grow due to the continuing cool weather, so many livestock producers are continuing to feed their animals.
