To all owners of antique automobiles and classic cars - the Happy Gang needs you, and your vehicle, to display at the fourth annual Cruise Night on Friday, June 24. Cruise night chair and Happy Gang spokesperson Heather van der Breggen said "anything interesting or unusual" is eligible to enter the Cruise Night car show, which will expand to cover Second and Third Streets this year. The Cruise Night is expanding to cover two streets instead of one because "we overflowed last year with 135 cars," said van der Breggen. She noted that there were entries at last year's Cruise Night from Saskatoon, Estevan, Regina and elsewhere. Many of those out-of-town car-owners said they would bring their clubs back because they loved the format of the event, which is unique among car shows for putting cars on the street, rather than lining them up in a large building. Early entries are being accepted at York Jewellers in Weyburn. There is a $5 charge to enter the event. Those who enter are eligible to win a ton of prizes, including special Peoples' Choice prizes that are voted on by the public. Voters themselves can win prizes also. There will also be a stereo competition this year in the parking lot of Knox Hall, organized by New Age Electronics. Basically, the competition will match cars to see who has the loudest sound system, said van der Breggen. The public is also encouraged to come out and buy food from the many non-profit groups who will be out at the Cruise Night, including the Weyburn Youth Centre, Special Olympics, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts. The Cruise Night was started several years ago by a group of downtown business-owners wanting to organize a major fund-raiser. |
