Four area students soon off to Que. for exchange

Four youths from the Souris-Moose Mountain riding were chosen to take part in the federal Summer Work Student Exchange program, which will see the students spend six weeks in Quebec, and students from Quebec will spend six weeks in this riding.

Sarah Acton and Candace Shirkie, both of Weyburn, Leah McKerricher of Ogema and Stephanie Walter of Lampman were chosen to take part in the program, which will see them spending six weeks in Sainte Foy, Que.

They will be working full-time there, as well as practicing their French and learning about their culture.

Participants in the program are placed with non-profit organizations for full-time employment throughout the six-week exchange.

The Quebec program coordinator is planning for weekend trips for the students to explore the region and practice their French. The local students will leave on June 29 by Via Rail for Quebec.

Meanwhile, five Francophone students will come to Weyburn, and local program coordinator Michelle Pilon will set up their activities, with assistance from the Weyburn Lions Club, who will help administer the program here.

The students will be employed by local non-profit organizations that have received a grant through the exchange program to help pay the students.

The Quebec students will be welcomed with an informal barbecue on Saturday, July 2, where they will meet their host families.

The Summer Work Student Exchange program is in its 10th year, founded by Denis Paradis, and currently administered by the Canadian Unity Council. There will be approximately 1,200 students from across Canada taking part this year.
