Sports days, pizza parties, ranch adventures and overnight camp-outs are just some of the activities planned this summer for the 2005 Wheatland-Souris Challenge. Registration forms for the Challenge have already gone out to most Weyburn schools, but they are also available at the Weyburn Leisure Centre. The deadline to register is Monday, June 27. The Wheatland Souris Challenge "Extreme Heat Blaster" camp is put on each year by the Southeast Saskatchewan Association for Culture, Recreation and Sport (SESACRS). Its sole purpose is to offer children, ages six to 12, a fun-filled summer full of wild and crazy activities. The Wheatland Souris Challenge will begin the week of Monday, July 11, and continue until Friday, Aug. 19. Each week will have a special theme and lots of games and activities corresponding to that theme. For example, Outdoor Week will feature nature hikes, ranch trips and outdoor scavenger huts. Crazy Culture Week will feature drama day and a field trip to Heritage Village. Besides that, there will be bowling, swim parties, camping trips, carnivals, sports days and lots of other activities. July 11-15 is Welcome Week, July 18-22 is Outdoors Week, July 25-29 is Athlete's Week, Aug. 1-5 is Crazy Culture Week, Aug. 8-12 is Adventure Week and Aug. 15-19 is Wind Down Week. This year's Wheatland Challenge co-ordinator is Lindsay Gardner, aided by a team of energetic play leaders. The camp runs Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Every day, the group gets together at the Weyburn Leisure Centre and then goes on the day's activities. The cost is $40 per child for each week, or $80 for two weeks. Parents may sign up their children for any of the weeks as they like. However, the cost is only $100 if you sign up your child for the first or second halves of the Wheatland Challenge; the first half runs July 11-29, and the second half runs Aug. 2-19. Alternatively, the fee is $150 if a child is enrolled for the duration of the challenge. There is also a reduced rate for families with more than two children enrolled.
