Fillmore to mark double Centennial on weekend

The village of Fillmore is marking its Centennial this July 1st weekend, along with the province's 100th year, and have a full long weekend of activities planned.

Registration will begin on Thursday, June 30 from 5-9 p.m., with an ice-breaker from 6 to midnight at the beer gardens in the rink.

Friday, July 1, will start off with breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m., and the parade will kick off the weekend in style at 10 a.m. As soon as the parade is over, residents can gather in the rink for the opening ceremonies, at which time the dedication of the historic hitching post will be made.

The original hitching post used in Fillmore was found, and was set up at the museum, and people will be invited to go over and see it over the Centennial weekend.

The canteen will be open for the day Friday and Saturday, , and the beer gardens are open from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. both days.

There is entertainment starting at 1:30 p.m. on both days, along with a threshing demonstration at 1 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Baseball gets underway in the afternoon along with the silent auction and kids' activities.

The museum is open from 3 to 5 p.m., and a steak supper will be held at 5. The day will end with two dances, at the rink and at the Hall, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

On Saturday, a horse pull will be featured at 3 p.m. in addition to all the other activities, and fireworks will end the day Saturday after dark.

The weekend will wrap up on Sunday, July 3 with a community church service at noon, after a breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. There will also be draws made for a Fillmore picture, elevator candles, silver belt buckles and a fisherman teddy bear.
