Two area organizations will split Centennial grant money, decided the RM of Weyburn council at their June meeting. The two organizations, the South Weyburn Community Centre and the Nickle Lake Regional Park board, will split the grant money of $17,000, said reeve Carmen Sterling. "Each group submitted a wish list which we in turn submitted under the program. The project is to upgrade public-use facilities," said the reeve. For the South Weyburn group, they will focus on building repairs, such as roofing, and completion of some projects, including interior work at the centre, located south of Weyburn on Highway 35; the centre originally served as South Weyburn School. At Nickle Lake, the funding will include a replacement of the pump shack for the paddling pool area. The RM council spent an extensive amount of time at their meeting reviewing the municipality's emergency plan, with a representative from the provincial government on hand. The plan outlines what the RM's responsibilities are in the event of a public emergency, and also defines what sort of emergency they would be responsible for within their boundaries. These would include a tornado, heavy winds and rain, flooding and train derailments where hazardous materials are involved, said Reeve Sterling. "We have to put in some specifics of what we would do should an emergency happen in our boundaries. For example, it's our full responsibility to retain control over the situation, such as if it were a train derailment. Different members of council have different roles should an emergency come up, and we have to maintain control of the situation," said the reeve. The RM council also reviewed a request from the Nickle Lake Park board for funding for paving their access road. The council agreed to fund $24,000 for the access road, and will provide those funds this year. Sterling said the RM has a future reserves fund for road-work, and can use the money now if it will help the project go ahead this year. The City of Weyburn and other neighbouring RMs were also approached for help; the city council agreed to help, but they will put it in their 2006 budget as their current year's budget is already set. |
