The Weyburn Agricultural Society pulled off one of its "best fairs" ever from July 4-6, with attendance for this year's Fair Days up to 9,079 people, an increase of 150 from last year. Over the 10-year average, attendance went up by 500 people. Organizers of this year's event, however, were pleased with the way fair went. "It is one of our best fairs for a long time," said Sandy Bell of the Weyburn Agricultural Society. The Weyburn talent show was held on the evenings of July 4-5. Tenille Arts won the junior side of the competition and Kendra Weimer and Kendra McCallum won the senior side. Arts won $100 and a trip to the provincial talent show competition in Saskatoon on Aug. 14. Weimer and McCallum split $500 and will also attend the provinicial competition. The senior winner at provincials has the opportunity to go to nationals in Quebec City, Que. The 4-H sale was a huge success with an all-time high for prices. There were 128 heads of cattle that went for $1.79 per pound. Farm Credit Canada presented the Weyburn Agriculture Society $5,000 for new bleaches. Bell said a local mining group also gave a boost this year, as they bought a cow at the 4-H sale, resold the cow and donated the money towards the new bleachers. The bleachers held up well this year with 1,500 packing the stands for the demolition derby. Twenty cars were entered and kept the fans well-entertained. "It was a tremendous success in our eyes," said Demolition Derby organizer Mike Hudson. The winner of the feature heat was James Frayn ($1,000 and trophy). Second was Shawn Butz ($500 and trophy) and third was Jarad Bourassa. Winning the consolation heat was Wayne Frayn ($500 and trophy). In second was Garth Kaufmann ($300 and trophy) and third was Tyler Metheral. The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce also put on a record breaking parade, as there were 110 floats entered. This breaks the previous record of 92 floats in the parade. Winners of parade awards are as follows: The Individual Award went to I.K.E. Mobile and second place went to South Saskatchewan Choppers. The Organizations Award went to Soo Line Historical Musuem, with the Weyburn Nature Society getting second place. Honourable mentions go to Creelman Float, Canadian Mental Health, Knights of Columbus, Weyburn Red Wings, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Weyburn Special Olympics and Wheelchair Foundation of Canada.
