Big Brothers' program teaches kids about police

By Shawn Slaght

Weyburn Big Brothers and Sisters are helping develop the relationship between the police and the Little Brothers and Sisters through the Kids n' Kops Summer Program.

Eleven kids involved in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Association, ranging from ages seven to 13, learn how to socialize with others, build self-esteem and, most of all, develop a positive relationship with the Weyburn Police.

"They (the police) are going to talk to us about the different areas of crime," Program Assistant Tanya Pohl said about the group's next trip to the police station on July 13.

The program runs for six weeks and started on July 4. During those six weeks, the kids make eight trips to the police department.

On their first trip, the kids got a tour of the police station. In the weeks following, they will learn about fraud, break and enter investigations, home safety, street and bicycle safety, traffic accident investigations, fingerprints and arrest procedures, self defense and a demonstration of equipment.

Kids n' Kops does more than take the kids to the police station; they also get to do fun activities. Recently, the kids went bowling on July 7 and played mini-golf and went swimming at Nickle Lake on July 11.

Other activies scheduled for the summer include presentations on self-esteem and drug and alcohol awareness, a magic show, scavenger hunt, water games at River Park, swimming at the Leisure Centre and a trip to the Kenosee Waterslides on Aug. 12, the final day of the program.

Kids n' Kops has been offered in Weyburn before. The Weyburn Big Brothers and Big Sisters Association last ran the program in 1999.

These activities are only for kids involved in Big Brothers and Sisters.

Call the Weyburn Big Brothers and Sisters if you are interested in getting involved.
