Graham DeLaet of Weyburn defeated over 100 golfers to won the Mosaic Amateur Men's Provincial Championship at the Wascana Country Club in Regina on Friday. After shooting six under par after four rounds, DeLaet is happy with the way his weekend went. "It's a good feeling to make it to provincial finals," DeLaet said. DeLaet shot a 69 in the first round to put him in second at three under par. He was two shots back of the leader, Tyler Wright from Regina. The second round was difficult for DeLaet as he shot a 75 and three strokes above par. He dropped into a tie for third, at even par and four shots back of the leaders. However, DeLaet stayed calm as he knew he had time to catch up. "It was a little disappointing but there were still 36 holes left," DeLaet said. "A lot can change in 36 holes." DeLaet shot a 70 in the third round putting him two under and in a tie for the lead with Wright and Jason Galon from Regina. In the end, it would be a two-man race to the finish between Wright and DeLaet, who had been battling all week for the lead. DeLaet scored his best round on the final day, shooting a 68 for a final score of 282, six strokes under par. Wright couldn't catch him, with a final score of three under par. He has placed the previous two years, but this is the first year DeLaet has won the amateur championship. "I finally got the monkey off my back this year," DeLaet said. The top four players will move on to the national championship with DeLaet as team captain because of his win. The Men's National Championship will take place on Aug. 12-19 at the Bell Bay Golf Club in Badeck, Cape Breton Island. Other competitors from Weyburn at the Provincial Amateur Championship was Rick Hallberg, who finished 23rd with a score of 21 over par. Graham's father Norm DeLaet, Darcy Herlick and Perry Folk all missed the cut. |
