Weyburn's In motion committee has provided a resource that can be used by all ages of people, namely backpacks with physical activity equipment and information on where and how to become more physically active. The committee donated two children and youth backpacks to each elementary school and the Weyburn Public Library, and in addition two adult backpacks were received by the library. The backpacks were made available to be loaned out by the school resource centres and from the library in the same way as a library book. The children and youth backpacks include items that can be used individually or by multiple users, such as skipping ropes, tennis balls, badminton rackets and birdies, horse shoe or ring-toss set, footballs and soccer balls. The adult backpack includes a pedometer, ankle/wrist weights, a power band and badminton rackets and birdies. Both types of backpacks also contain an In Motion backpack manual, which lists various games that can be played with the equipment supplied, or with little or no equipment. There is also an information section with pamphlets on activities and programs offered at the various facilities in Weyburn, as well as contact information for the sport and recreation organizations and clubs in Weyburn. The backpacks were funded with sponsorship or in-kind donations by the Community Initiatives Fund, the City of Weyburn, Saskatchewan Centennial, SaskTel, Weyburn Youth Soccer, Sun Country Health Region, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, SaskEnergy and the Weyburn Red Wings. With the success of the backpacks so far, the Weyburn In Motion committee is now working towards supplying one for every classroom in every elementary school in Weyburn. In Motion is a province-wide program designed to blend provincial, regional and local resources together with community leadership to help increase the physical activity for health benefits where people live, work and play. |
