The Weyburn Horticultural Society will be holding their 80th annual Horticulture Show on Aug. 5 and 6 at Knox Hall in conjunction with the Weyburn Wheat Festival. Entering flowers and vegetables is open to everyone and registration will start on tomorrow afternoon from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 7-8:30 a.m. "We will take entries on Thursday evening and Friday morning," said Heather Cugnet, president of the Horticulture Society. The judges for this year's show will be Charlene Britton from Regina, judging the vegetables, and Jean Procknow from Weyburn, judging the floral arrangements. Judging will take place on Aug. 5, running from 8:30-9 a.m. The show is then open to the public from noon-5 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. Visitors can come by the show, have some tea and try the society's traditional Strawberry Shortcake. "We have our Strawberry Shortcake Tea Room," Cugnet said. There will be special arrangements at the show to commemorate Saskatchewan's centennial birthday and also celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Horticulture Show. There will also be the traditional arrangements that go with the Weyburn Wheat Festival. Each exhibit gets put into a class during the show depending on the type of vegetables or flowers shown. "We have Annuals, Perennials and there are 11 classes," Cugnet said. Some of the classes include Peas, Glads, Roses, arrangements, junior exhibitors, fruits and Dahlias. Cash prizes are given out to the winners of each class. The prizes vary depending on the class. Usually the Horticulture Show gets a good turn out with 300-500 entries. Last year, the show had 450 entries. |
