A successful end to the season

Beavers win league title, win silver at provincials

The Co-op Midget Beavers won their league championship on Friday and placed second at Provincials last weekend.

The Beavers started their playoff run with two wins over the Moose Jaw Canucks. The next round put them up against the Regina Pacers.

Putting 13 runs on the board, the Beavers defeated Regina in a one-game series. Troy Miller had a great day at the plate, hitting two doubles and a triple in the win.

The league final was at home against the Moose Jaw Cardinals. A good crowd came out for the game and they weren't disappointed. The game was a pitching duel between Weyburn pitcher Brennan Luffman and Moose Jaw pitcher Andrew Sillers.

Sillers was able to keep the Beavers quiet for most of the game, but it wasn't enough as the Beavers pulled off a 3-1 victory.

The Beavers' biggest victory of the season came on the last weekend of July as they place second in the AAA Midget Provincial Tournament. The Beavers went into the tournament ranked sixth in the province, but proved to be a better team than that by beating the second, third and fourth ranked teams on their way to the final game.

The Beavers started the tournament on Friday afternoon by playing the eighth ranked Moose Jaw Cardinals. Preston Shupe pitched a complete game as the Beavers won 8-3.

It was a close game until the third inning. After the Beavers' leadoff and clean-up hitters were kicked out of the game for arguing calls made by the umpire, the Beavers sparked a rally that was largely due to a huge two-out, bases-loaded triple by K.C. McCormick.

After the big hit, the Canucks couldn't muster up a comeback and the Beavers coasted through the rest of the game.

The second ranked Regina White Sox were the next opponents for the Beavers on Saturday.

Brian Luffman was the starting pitcher for Weyburn and this game turned out to be one of the more exciting games in the tournament.

The Beavers jumped out to an early lead when Adam Wilson hit a two-run single in the second inning to make the score 3-1. There wasn't any more scoring until the top of the seventh inning when the Sox put together a three-run rally to bring the score to 4-3.

Weyburn came up in the bottom of the ninth inning down a run, but with the top of the order coming up. After a couple of key walks, Will Morris came up to the plate with two runners in scoring position.

Morris came through with a walk-off base hit that made its way through the right side of the infield and easily cashed in both Beavers runners that were on base. The final score was 5-4.

That night, the Beavers faced the fourth-ranked team, the Saskatoon Sun Devils. Parker Cameron pitched the majority of the game and Evan Schultz came into relief in the later innings.

The game was a back-and-forth battle, as both teams had leads throughout the game. Thankfully, the Beavers were again on the bats, and they squeezed out an 8-7 victory.

The win clinched first place in their pool with a perfect 3-0 record.

On Sunday morning, the Beavers found themselves in a cross-over game with the third-ranked Saskatoon Giants. Brennan Luffman again took to the hill for the Beavers on just under 24 hours of rest from his last start.

He pitched very well once again as the Beavers jumped out to an early 8-3 lead and looked to be well on their way to the final game. But the Giants made the game interesting by climbing back to a 10-10 score going into the bottom of the seventh.

It was the Beavers' turn to make a comeback. Evan Schultz led off the inning by drawing a walk to get himself, the winning run, to first base with no one out. Adam Ziegler attempted a sacrifice bunt to move Schultz to second but a good play by the Giant's pitcher put Schultz out on the force at second.

Brennan Luffman came to the plate and hit a hard single through the right side which should have advanced Ziegler to third and Luffman at first, but the ball took a bad bounce in the outfield and got by the right fielder. This enabled Ziegler to score and the Beavers won 11-10.

The final game was played against the Saskatoon Cubs. The Cubs got an early lead in the final game and never looked back. Parker Cameron, like Luffman in the semi-final, pitched this game on less than one full day of rest.

The Cubs jumped out to a 4-1 lead and slowly increased their lead throughout the game until the top of the seventh inning, when the Beavers staged a final comeback attempt.

It was 8-3 in favour of the Cubs going into the final inning, but the Beavers never said die. Against one of the top-ranked pitchers in all of Saskatchewan, the Beavers put together a three-run rally to close the gap to 8-6.

That was as close as they would get as the Cubs became the only undefeated team in the tournament and also became the Provincial Champions.

The Beavers will head to AAA Westerns in Winnipeg for their second place effort. This tournament takes place the weekend of Aug. 26-28.
